I was allowed to keep chickens in my back yard in Marquette (in the city) because we used them for show at fairs and such. If they were exhibition fowl, they counted as exotic pets, not farm animals. :) That might be a good loophole for you, too. Bringing a bird or two to the county fair once a year isn't that hard to do (and would TOTALLY appeal to your "back to the land" senses).

I'm a real estate attorney. Find the deed when you bought your house or something that has the legal description of your property on it....title insurance policy, copy of mortgage or deed that got recorded. That will tell you if it's a platted subdivision.

Having worked one summer doing filing and research for a property office, and having just looked up "plat" on wikipedia, I can say with about 50% confidence that your land may or may not be a platted subdivision. (Thanks, Heisenburg!) I believe it to mean that if your two acres are all one plat, and not itself broken up into several plats (a house plat and a yard plat, for example), then you could be okay.

If it IS divided into two or more parcels, then you could apply to the county to get your two acres consolidated into one plat. Who knows how much time that would take/how much money they'd fleece you for.

There should be a law where you have to go to your neighbors and ask if their knickers would get all twisted if you raised chickens, rather than this county foofrah.
